IE UNIVERSITY CONTINUES COMMITTING TO NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND IMPROVING ITS QUALITY STANDARDS, AS ITS WI-FI NETWORK, WITH EKAHAU

The recognised and renowned IE University was founded in 1973 and opened its doors in the financial district of Madrid, with 7,000 square metres and capacity for more than 1,000 students.

Years later, IE University continues to expand with the opening of new specialized schools and offices in different countries. The institution today has more than 29 international offices on all continents.

In this way, IE University has reaffirmed its standing, achieving more and more international recognition and collaborations, being considered one of the best business schools in the world according to “The Financial Times”.

Given its position in society, IE University aims to offer its users the best resources, both academic and technological. Concerning technological resources, one of the most valued by students is having a good Wi-Fi network always available.

At this point Ayscom collaborated, together with the communications department of IE University, in the study of the Wi-Fi network in all the buildings belonging to the organization. The studies were carried out in 21 centers in Madrid and Santa Cruz La Real Convent in Segovia, declared a national heritage in 1931, which entails a more exhaustive study due to its architectural structure and its protection, as heritage, before other alternatives of deployment of access points.

WHY WAS THIS STUDY CONDUCTED?

IE University, always with desire to improve and offer the highest quality of service to its students, decided to rely on Ayscom’s Wi-Fi expert group, to explore possible improvements, suggestions and points to optimize in its wireless infrastructure.

METHODOLOGY

The study was carried out in 16 days. The measurements were carried through with the Ekahau Pro and Sidekick solution. Ayscom team prepared the documentation and reports necessary for IE University to take appropriate measures to improve its Wi-Fi network, according to the needs of its business.

When the measurements taken were analyzed in the laboratory, Ayscom team detected excess transmission power taking into account the density of access points that existed per plant. This fact produced a high level of overlap between channels, not only in 2.4GHz, but also in the 5GHz band. In summary, the incidents were due to the excessive power emitted by the access points and to the fact that the Wi-Fi channels chosen were not suitable.

THE SOLUTION

IE University adjusted the signal strength following Ayscom’s recommendations to minimize interference. They also changed the channel plan for which Ayscom recommended them.
